The Shochu Diet is Over

March 30, 2012 by Stephen 2 Comments

The Shochu Diet is OverBack on September 1st of last year i decided to start The Shochu Diet. As many scientists have done over the centuries, I used myself as my own laboratory. When doing experiments, scientists hold all conditions constant, changing only one at a time to see which has the desired effect. That's nearly impossible in a non-laboratory setting, but I did what I could.

Shochu Diet – Week 21

February 17, 2012 by Stephen Leave a Comment

Shochu Diet – Week 21

If you’ve been following The Shochu Diet, you’ll know that I reached a 12.2 lb weight loss after 11 weeks. It’s now been almost twice that long (21 weeks), but the holidays happened (regained 5 lbs by New Years). Fortunately, I’ve started to claw some of that weight back again thanks to an end to the festivities.

As of week 21 I’m back down to an 11.4 lb loss and now within sight of my original goal of 15 lbs. That would represent 8.5% of my original body weight. Not a bad reduction at all. I’m not there yet, but I’m still working on it!… Read More “Shochu Diet – Week 21”

Shochu Diet Flatlining?

Shochu Diet Flatlining?

A funny thing happened on my Shochu Diet. Thanksgiving happened.

As of week 11 I was at my lowest weight on the diet, down 12.2 lbs. The Week 12 milestone was Thanksgiving Day. My Mom:

  • brined a turkey
  • made stuffing
  • made mashed potatoes with lots of butter
  • baked 3 pies
  • plied us with chocolate martinis and red wine

I finished 3 servings of turkey and various side dishes. Despite the hiking for exercise and pretty strict adherence to shochu, Week 12 saw a +1.1 lb increase.

Week 13 saw another +1.1 lb increase, because it included the leftover meals and the half pan of brownies Mom packed up in my carry-on bag.… Read More “Shochu Diet Flatlining?”

Shochu Diet Update!

November 20, 2011 by Stephen 1 Comment

Shochu Diet Update!

The Shochu Diet started on a lark. I’d seen some photos of myself from a friend’s wedding and realized I’d gained more weight than I had imagined. It wasn’t so much that my weight had climbed, but that my fitness had declined. I’m normally very active with cycling, soccer, and tennis, but a broken fib lead to a torn meniscus in my right knee, which slowed my summer down considerably.

I looked back at my Wii Fit history and found that on September 1, 2010 I had weighed 169 lbs. Exactly one year later I weighed 177 lbs. That’s not a terrible weight for someone my height (5’9”), but it’s pretty close to the most I’ve ever weighed (180 lbs).… Read More “Shochu Diet Update!”

Shochu Diet Week-9

November 4, 2011 by Stephen Leave a Comment

This is becoming a lifestyle change rather than a diet, but it’s still working. Down almost 2 lbs this week. 11.7 lbs over 9 weeks.

I’m now 3 lbs from the goal I set to reach 2.5 months from now.

Shochu Reviews

iichiko Kurobin

My personal favorite iichiko brand available in the US is iichiko Kurobin. Kurobin is literally translated as "black bottle," which is a pretty on the nose description of this evocative packaging. It is simply too pretty to throw away after finishing.

Tasting Notes: The SG Shochu KOME

Putting your nose in a glass of The SG Shochu Kome shows you just how complex a vacuum distilled rice shochu can be. Ginjo sake aromas from the yeast, pineapple, melon, and a faint hint of dairy-like lactic acidity are all present.

iichiko silhouette

This iichiko silhouette is probably the most common Japanese shochu currently available in the United States. In NYC I’ve seen it in random mom & pop liquor stores as the only shochu among a shelf of sake options. It’s most commonly available in 750ml bottles, though I’ve seen other sizes in other countries. This is a great starter shochu, which is why I’ve chosen it for my first tasting note. It was my introduction to shochu back in 2008. I’d had Korean soju before, but Japanese shochu is a strikingly different (and better) experience.

Tasting Notes: Nankai

Nankai Shochu
At first whiff, Nankai smells faintly grassy, which is common in kokuto shochu owing to how kokuto sugar is made from fresh cut cane and that fresh grassiness is a sign of well made kokuto sugar. Sugar cane is, after all, a tall perennial grass. It is still pretty wild that they can capture that after fermentation and distillation.

Shochu Reviews

Tasting Notes: Lento Shochu

Lento is the top selling kokuto shochu in Japan, and it is available internationally as well. Try it on the rocks or with sparkling water for a refreshing taste of the Amami Islands. Kanpai!

Tasting Notes: The SG Shochu MUGI

The SG Shochu MUGI Label
The SG Shochu MUGI wraps several barley shochu identities into one. It's lightly barrel-aged and carries the associated sweet notes. But there's also a graininess that is revealed when the temperature of the drink drops. It's a versatile barley shochu that can be enjoyed a variety of ways.

Tasting Notes: The SG Shochu IMO

The SG Shochu IMO is a clear invitation to create the classic imo cocktail. If you get it right, it will resonate and cascade around the world until you can't not have sweet potato shochu on your menu if you consider yourself a proper drinking establishment.
